Sonohyan-utaki was a place of worship for the king in the days of the Ryukyu kingdom, and is comprised of the area including a stone gate and the hantan mountain area situated on a path to the rear left of Shureimon. In December of 2000 it was designated as a world heritage site under the name "Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu."
